Appropriate Post-Op Care Can Boost Your Recovery After Wisdom Tooth Removal

Posted .

After having your wisdom teeth removed, you will need to take some time to recover, and it’s important that you show the extraction sites proper care during this time. Follow any instructions provided by our dentists during your visit. To give you an idea of what to expect, we have provided some general instructions for optimal recovery following wisdom tooth removal:

– Biting periodically on gauze pads can help blood clots form faster. However, if you are still experiencing bleeding 24 hours after your procedure, contact Jack O. Smalley, DDS.

– During recovery, maintain a diet of soft foods like thin soup, ice cream, and pudding. As your mouth heals, you can gradually add in solid foods.

– Take some down time after surgery and minimize any activity for a few days.

– After 24 hours, you can rinse your mouth with warm saltwater to clean the treated areas and reduce swelling and discomfort.

– Prop your head on pillows to keep the surgical site elevated.

– If you experience pain or swelling, you can apply a cold pack to the outer cheek at the treated sites at  15- to 20-minute intervals.

– Don’t drink from a straw for a few days, as this could dislodge a blood clot and delay healing time.

– Avoid smoking tobacco to decrease your risk of transferring germs and bacteria to the wounds or loosening your blood clot.

– Brush your smile as normal, treating the extraction sites with great care.
